How I face it

Be confident in our skin, love our flaws.

Over the past few years I’ve noticed a change in my skin. I didn’t realise the impact perimenopause and menopause can have on the skin. Everyone’s needs are individual. My main concerns are dehydration and hypo pigmentation when is comes to my face. For my pigmentation issues I see a dermatologist, I need a prescription. The rest of my body is dryer these days especially my hands and bottom of my feet. Unfortunately I’m unable to keep my feet hidden during the summer. Definitely an area I prefer to keep under wraps, and my toes I rarely expose.

My first trip to a dermatologist was almost 2 decades ago so I’m pretty adept at knowing what works for me and doesn’t.

When it comes to my face, I’ve cleansed, toned, moisturised for longer than I care to remember. Never going to bed with a face of make up. Now, much of the time I’m make up free, how things change. The aim for me is to have fresh, healthy and glowy skin. My aim!

Skin health comes down to what you do, what you eat, drink, your genes and exercise.

Hydration

I drink in excess of the recommended 6-8 glasses of water a day, due to my sport and where we live. Keeping hydrated helps my skin to look fresh and spot free. I start my day with a couple of glasses of water, then my beloved coffee.

Cleansing

A morning and night ritual. I use a mild balm, non foaming cleanser. I find it doesn’t strip my skin of natural oils, I dislike my skin feeling tight and dry.

TIP

I use machine wash flannels. My preference is a cleanser with active ingredients. I’m prone to breakouts.

Serums

I have to admit, serums are my guilty pleasure. I’m never without a vitamin C serum. I like high potency!

Moisturise

I prefer to use moisturisers with plant based ingredients along with hyaluronic acid and a few trusted actives.

Sunscreen

Lastly I slap on a good dose of sunscreen. Not a lie, it’s visible on the side of my face in my not so good selfie. I’ll ensure it’s rubbed in properly in future.

Evenings

Cleanse, use a serum depending on my skin. I exfoliate a few times a week, again with high potency actives. I never use scrubs. Lastly moisturise.

When I lived in the UK or visited I’d go for a high tech facial twice a year, however I haven’t visited for a while. Face masks and under eye masks work for me. I’ve found a few brands where I can see the difference straight away. I use masks weekly or if I’m going out.

Everyone’s skin is different. I think the key is get to know your skin and do OR not do what suits you. With age I’ve become more confident, I’m sure you have too.

This is just my routine, ‘how I face it’. We all know we’re not a one size fits all, thank goodness!

What do you do?

I have dry skin. I use Nutraderm Lotion for extra dry skin all over after showering. I have it in my car, as well as in the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. At night, depending on where in the world we are (the western US is really dry), I’ll give my feet – or sometimes my legs entirely – a quick slather.

Sunscreen is also a must, and I’m sad not to ve able to get my favorite Italian brand.
