with mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come – William Shakespeare
Often asked if I’m wearing eye liner and eye shadow on my lids. The answer is no. I just have dark circles around my eyes, uneven skin tone in parts plus blemishes. Almost forgot to mention my two toned lips, it’s all natural! I’m finally ok with everything. Becoming older is incredibly liberating.
AHA and BHA
Essentially these are acids, used in products to gently remove dead skin cells depending which type you use. In turn stimulating the skin for exfoliation. No need for alarm, in my opinion they’re great actives and do a great job! Remember toners, I suppose in a way these acids which gently exfoliate have taken over with far superior results.
Exfoliating is my guilty pleasure, high on my agenda for my menopausal skin.
What are they?
AHA’s – Alpha Hydroxy Acids are commonly used ingredients. Include glycolic, lactic, citric, there are others. Stimulates GAGs (glycosaminoglycans) formation and collagen.
BHA – Beta Hydroxy Acid works is salicylic acid, works in a similar way to AHAs. Originally derived from certain plants including white willow bark. This helps skin to exfoliate naturally, getting rid of dead cells.
what are they for?
Glycolic acid – Originally derived from sugar cane. Commonly used in skin care products. Gentle exfoliates, increases cell turnover. Often formulated in products to help treat enlarged pores, skin showing signs of ageing also hyperpigmentation. Good for stimulating better collagen production.
Lactic acid – Originally derived from milk. Similar to glycolic acid however viewed more gentle, generally used on sensitive skins. Lactic acid dissolves the build up of dead cells, improving skin texture. Good for dehydrated or dry skin.
Salicylic acid – exfoliates by breaking down the ‘glue’ that holds cells together causing breakouts. Allowing cells to rid access sebum. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, meaning it penetrates deep into the pores, breaking up dead skin cells and clearing congestion. Good for spots and acne.
What I do
I switch between a few brands. Try new ones however often return to my old and trusted. I’d say do what works for you. We know it’s not a one size fits all. I’ve used Obagi Medical since my mid 30s and also their prescription only products for my hyperpigmentation. I use Obagi-C Exfoliating Day Lotion daily for glycolic acid, also formulated with hyaluronic acid which helps my skin and retain moisture. For breakouts my trusted Sarah Chapman Rapid Radiance Cleanse with salicylic and lactic acid, this Can also be used as a mask. Sarah Chapman Liquid Facial Resurfacer I use from time to time formulated with lactic acid.
