Whether approaching menopause, in the thick of it, or well and truly embracing your menopausal years most of us are more than aware of the benefits of exercise. Set with good intentions many of us fail to get off the starting blocks. Our reasons are vast and varied. Trying a new activity just might be the motivation you need.
The old adage ‘we’re never too old to try something new’ rings ever true. Fully aware I’m no ‘spring chicken’ new comes with challenges, effort and not being afraid to make mistakes.
Mountain bikes I know are popular, however living in the Austrian Alps the arduous climbs would without doubt prove too much for the likes of me. But now we have e-bikes, are a fantastic alternative, giving access and endless possibilities to many, including me.
We’d (me and my husband) discussed the prospect of e-bikes many a time but never bitten the bullet. Until one September morning, two large weighty boxes arrived. I instinctively knew these were our new modes of transport for leisure. My new friend!
The first jaunt
No natural ability when it comes to cycling and more accustomed to my race bike, I mounted this rather hefty two-wheeler. Pushing down hard on my pedals, off I went with my husband leading the way. Quickly the distance between us widened, nothing that unusual he is always out-front. We were on a slight incline, I resolutely pushed on. Around the corner, thankfully my husband had waited patiently for me to catch up. Only then realising I hadn’t switched my battery on! My rookie error not to be repeated.
What I learned
Apart from ensuring my battery is switched on. Without doubt I lack confidence and skill on the descents. Climbs proved challenging when trails were steep and narrow. Strangely these were the same trails I’d hiked, seems I trust my footing more than my wheels. This said I’m ready for another jaunt!
